May ContainThis is a featured page

What does "may contain" mean on an ingredients label?

In many cases, "may contain" means that the product was manufactured or handled in a facility that also handles products that contain the ingredient disclosed. This information is largely included for the purposes of informing people who are highly allergic to even trace amounts of that ingredient.

Apart from the issue of allergies, this is considered a grey area for many vegans. Some vegans would not want to eat food that has been in the vicinity of an animal product, while others consider it a non-issue.

the thing is, ''may'' contain is one thing (mainly to alert allergic people and to not get sued), ''contains'' is other thing, it DOES 100% sure contain that animal product listed. it's a grey area but i'm not a obsessed vegan, i buy thing in a supermarket that has animal products, i don't contribute to that specific target. i don't contribute to animal suffering with my buys, we (unfortunately) don't live in a vegan friendly world.

i think it matters. if a label says "may contain trace amount of milk ingredients", this means that the factory produces milk products. if your veganism is not just about health or animals that are directly affected, and goes farther, then you may not want to support the non-vegan factory or people who work with these products. then i guess it's similar to buying soy milk, as a lot of soy milk is made by dairy companies and whether you support the dairy industry or not, you're giving them your money if you buy their product, even if it's not milk.
