What is wikiVegan all about?
This community exists as a place for us to share information about little-known vegan options that are available at popular restaurants, grocery stores, or online. Feel free to post all of your favorites here.
By getting the word out about these vegan options, other vegans will get to enjoy them too. Not only that, but the demand for the product will go up, helping to ensure that the restaurant or market continues to offer them. (And possibly in some cases, that the place will even stay in business!)
For those affiliated with restaurants, grocery stores, or online stores that offer little-known vegan items, the invitation is open to post about them.

The Law of Supply and Demand
One of the principals this site is based on is an economic idea called supply and demand. We're not economists here. We may not be using the textbook definition of the term. But the basic idea as it applies to us is that if a company (a restaurant, restaurant chain, grocery store or chain, or online retailer) hears from a large number of its paying customers that they want vegan options, it's in that company's financial best interests to supply vegan options.
Once these companies start supplying more vegan options, more non-vegans are exposed to them and it may help facilitate them in transitioning to vegan. This is our simple little vegan activist model. Support the best interests of people and companies and thereby lead us all closer toward a vegan-friendly and animal-friendly world.
A world like that really is in everyone's best interests, so there's no need to fight about it or go to war with companies and each other. Veganism is about peace, not violence - even internal violence.
All that's needed is to buy vegan products where they're available and offer vegan options as much as possible. Eventually, everyone catches on in a way that's really organic and honors all people and animals. We're talkin' 'bout a gentle revolution.
What is there to do here?
First, check out the column to the left. Under the phrase "Wiki pages" is where the main categories of the site can be found. If anything seems interesting, click on it. Browse the site and see what it's all about.
Next, take a look under the heading "Browse by Keywords". Tags are assigned to pages based on what they're about. If a particular tag interests you, click it to see a list of pages that have that tag assigned to them.
Then, we've all had things we've filed in the backs of our minds, wondering, "is that vegan?" This site is the place to ask the question. Click the "Join This Wiki" link in the top-right corner to become a member of the site (it's free!) and then start posting questions, comments, and answers to other people's questions.
This community is here for vegans to support each other. If you've discovered a little-known vegan product or you know the answer to someone's question, please join in on the conversation. Make sure you check out our How to Help page.
Finally, feel free to add a new page to the site. Don't worry about getting information or spelling wrong. Since this whole thing is collaborative, we can all make changes. As time goes on, the information becomes more accurate and the spelling and grammar errors all get fixed!

My husband needed work shoes for a new job. We did not have time to shop on line and wait for delievery, and sadly, it was impossible to find any men's industrial shoe that was cruelty free. We ended up getting a sneaker/canvas shoe (not exactly what he needed) and were very frustrated. I literally went through the yellow pages calling every local retailer and NONE of them had NON leather mens work shoes.
We're still in the market, so if anyone can recommend a shoe seller that you know carries non-leather, please pass along the good word. Thanks. |

Anybody know a reliable company that sells SOYMILK in BULK at a reasonable (discounted) price? There are 4 vegans in our household, soon to be 5, and we burn through soymilk like crazy. We can drink about 3 cartons a week, all told, so would definately be willing to buy huge amounts at once.
Thanks! |

I'm a school librarian and learning about how to create and maintain a wiki. I thought this would be a good place to start since I've been vegan for about 20 years. It's really nice to see communities like this now forming online. The concept of open-source as it applies to information is really interesting and powerful.
I added a few links on the Online Resources list. Hope you enjoy them. Also, if anyone reading this is familiar with wiki development and administration, I'd appreciate hearing from them. My profile has my contact information. Specifically, I'm trying to find out about the editing process for wikis. That is, can new entries be approved by an editor, etc. before being posted? I am thinking of using this application in an educational setting, and want to be able to give teachers or myself the option to monitor entries. Thanks and hope to hear from you! |
